How the preview works
The preview measures your title and description in pixels using Google's font, the same way Google decides where to cut them off, rather than just counting characters. Titles wider than about 600 pixels on desktop are truncated with an ellipsis, and descriptions longer than roughly 158 characters are shortened.
The social preview shows how the page looks when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn or WhatsApp, using your og:image. Google may rewrite titles and descriptions it thinks don't match the page, so keep them accurate as well as compelling.
How long should a title tag be?
Aim for 50 to 60 characters and under about 600 pixels wide. Put the main keyword near the start and your brand name at the end.
How long should a meta description be?
Between 120 and 158 characters works well on desktop. On mobile, Google shows up to about 120 characters before cutting it off, so put the key message first.
Why does Google show a different title or description?
Google rewrites snippets it thinks don't match the search or the page content. Clear, accurate titles and descriptions that reflect the page are rewritten less often.
What size should a social share image be?
Use 1200 by 630 pixels (a 1.91:1 ratio) and keep important text away from the edges. Set it as og:image in your SEO plugin.
