What llms.txt is
llms.txt is a proposed standard: a short Markdown file at the root of your site that gives AI assistants and AI search tools a clean summary of who you are and links to your most important pages. It's like a sitemap written for language models rather than crawlers.
The format is simple: a title, a one-line summary as a quote, optional detail, then sections of links with short descriptions. Keep it focused on the pages that best explain your business, and update it when those pages change.
Does llms.txt help with AI search?
It's an emerging standard, and support varies between AI companies. It costs little to add, makes your key pages easy for AI tools to find and read, and is increasingly checked by AI crawlers and developer tools.
Where do I upload llms.txt?
To the root of your website, so it opens at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. On WordPress, upload it to the site's root folder via your host's file manager or FTP, or use an SEO plugin that supports it.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. robots.txt tells crawlers what they may access. llms.txt tells AI tools what your site is about and which pages matter most. Make sure robots.txt doesn't block the AI crawlers you want to reach you.
What should I include?
Your core service or product pages, about and contact pages, key guides, and pricing if it's public. Put nice-to-have pages like the blog under a section called Optional.
