How DMARC works
DMARC tells receiving mail servers what to do with messages that claim to be from your domain but fail SPF and DKIM checks, and where to send reports about them. You publish it as a TXT record at _dmarc.yourdomain.
The safe rollout is gradual: publish p=none with a report address, read the reports for two to four weeks to find every service that sends as you (your mail provider, newsletter tool, CRM, invoicing system), fix their SPF and DKIM, then move to quarantine and finally reject. Check your current records first.
Where do I add the DMARC record?
In your DNS provider (for example Cloudflare, GoDaddy or your registrar), add a TXT record with the host _dmarc and the generated value. Changes usually take effect within an hour.
Is p=none safe?
Yes. It doesn't block anything; it only turns on reporting. It's the right starting point, but it doesn't protect you from spoofing until you move to quarantine or reject.
Do I need SPF and DKIM before DMARC?
DMARC relies on them, so set up SPF and DKIM for every service that sends as your domain. You can publish DMARC with p=none at the same time to start collecting reports.
What do I do with DMARC reports?
Aggregate reports are XML files that are hard to read by hand. A DMARC reporting service turns them into a list of senders, showing which pass and which need fixing.
